I grew up in the Jamaican countryside, or as we say back home, “country,” where I learned to bake alongside my mother. I started out helping her rub butter and sugar together with a wooden spoon. We'd spend hours in the kitchen baking together. Making these cakes was always a labor of love. Even when we didn't have much, my mother found ways to make something special out of very little for her children, a story familiar to so many families.
These days, I have a few more tools in the kitchen, but I still make my cakes with the same love and care that went into the ones I grew up enjoying.
Through Sweet Jamaica Cakes, I'm sharing a little piece of home and the traditions that made those days so sweet. 💚💛
